President-elect Trump’s transportation policy priorities for his second administration are concentrated primarily on regulatory rescission, rural investments, and expanding domestic energy and innovation. His Transition team has signaled it wants to make a federal framework to regulate self-driving vehicles a top priority for the U.S. Department of Transportation. The framework will have to address safety, testing and deployment, liabilities, cybersecurity, foreign surveillance, and necessary infrastructure improvements.
Safety will remain the chief focus of the Department. All programs and rules will be centered on creating the safest, most efficient transportation network for all Americans.
Deregulation and Environmental Rules: Trump’s transportation priorities often intersect with his broader stance on deregulation. He aims to streamline transportation infrastructure projects by removing federal mandates on the transportation industry and cutting red tape that delays projects. These will be an administration-wide effort.
Infrastructure Investment: President-elect Trump will continue to support large-scale infrastructure development as long as investments go towards projects that support economic growth and job creation, especially in rural areas. The prioritization of climate and equity in federal funding will be removed. There may also be a greater focus on public-private partnerships in the financing and managing of projects to minimize taxpayer obligations.
Innovation and Technology: While safety, economic growth, and deregulation will be primary focuses, Trump will also support emerging transportation technologies like U.S.-made electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles, drones, and air taxis.
