Sponsoring events during the upcoming Democratic and Republican national conventions

With the RNC and the DNC approaching, the guidelines concerning application of the congressional gift rules to receptions and other VIP sponsored events were recently updated by the US House and Senate Ethics Committees. Individuals, companies, trade associations and even local governments that provide the gift in violation of the rules risk significant adverse publicity even though the legal liability for violating the gift rules runs to the member of Congress or congressional staff member who solicits or accepts the gift.
